Welcome to Wolf Prairie
Science Laboratory * Service Learning Site
Migratory Bird and Butterfly Habitat * Cultural Touchstone Sustainable Landscape
The Environmental Science classes of Westside High School have been working to create an outdoor classroom where students can experience a piece of our cultural history. Three hundred years ago, the Gulf Coastal Prairie was a sea of tall grass stretching 9 million acres along the coast of Louisiana and Texas. This exceptional ecosystem supported an amazing diversity of bird life, mammals, and plants. The soils were deep and rich, held in place by the roots of prairie grasses. Periodic wildfires prevented trees from out-competing the grasses. Immense herds of bison grazed through the wildflowers. Since that time, people have converted most of the prairie to agricultural fields, ranches and cities. Only 1% of the original Gulf Coastal Prairie is now left. Once restored, Wolf Prairie will be a portal back in time to give us the opportunity to experience this tall grass ecosystem as it once was.
Our Supporting Entities
Wolf Prairie is participating in the Katy Prairie Conservancy's Prairie Builder School Program. The Katy Prairie Conservancy provides guidance for the restoration management of our prairie as well as native plant donations and material support. Through the Coastal Prairie Partnership, we are able to network with other schools and prairie ecologists. Find us on the map of coastal prairies here.
